On the commemoration of one year since the beginning of this brutal genocide perpetrated in Gaza, the Communist Party of Canada reiterates its anti-imperialist and internationalist solidarity with the people and resistance of Palestine in their struggle for national liberation. This is not an ethnic or a religious battle. It is an anti-imperialist struggle that concerns all workers, supporters of peace, progressives and democrats throughout the world.

The Communist Party of Canada strongly condemns the recent Israeli attacks against Lebanon, the largest and deadliest since the 2006 war. In the span of barely a week, we have witnessed the detonation of Israeli-rigged pagers, bombings, and airstrikes—some reaching the suburbs of Beirut—that have killed more than a thousand people, primarily civilians. These attacks have destroyed public infrastructure, including roads, hospitals, and schools, and forcibly displaced half a million people.

En l’espace d’une semaine à peine, les explosions de téléavertisseurs truqués par Israël, les bombardements et attaques aériennes dont certaines ont atteint la banlieue de Beyrouth, ont fait plus de mille morts, principalement des civils, détruit des infrastructures publiques dont des routes, des hôpitaux, des écoles et déplacé de force un demi-million de personnes.
In late August PM Trudeau announced plans to impose tariffs on certain Chinese imports to Canada. These include a whopping 100% tariff on Chinese-made electrical vehicles (EVs), as well as 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum products from China, to take effect in October.
Interestingly, the tariffs were announced immediately after the ruling Liberals received a secret briefing from Jake Sullivan, the U.S. National Security Advisor, at their Cabinet retreat in Nova Scotia. Sullivan demanded that Canada follow suit in imposing such tariffs, in line with U.S. and EU tariffs imposed earlier this year. And the Trudeau Liberals meekly obliged Washington’s instructions.
The Communist Party of Canada has followed the July 28 presidential election in Venezuela with keen interest – not as detached observers, but as a Party with a history of solidarity with the struggles of the Venezuelan people for sovereignty, democracy, social justice, liberation from imperialist domination and ultimately for a socialist future. We extend our congratulations to the Venezuelan working class and progressive movements for continuing these struggles under the extreme pressure of US imperialism and domestic reaction, which desperately seek one way or another to reverse the revolutionary process initiated by the late President Hugo Chavez.
As Israel’s genocidal bombing of civilians in Rafah continues, people in Canada who defend the rights of the Palestinian people are facing an escalating series of attacks. During May and early June, there has been a frightening pattern of more arrests, firings, media-bashings, and political intimidation.
End US interference and provocations now!
The Communist Party strongly condemns the 64 year old US economic blockade of Cuba which is a major contributor to the current economic difficulties in Cuba including a shortage of food and electricity. This is the whole purpose of the US blockade as stated in this 1960 US State Department memo:
“every possible means should be undertaken promptly to weaken the economic life of Cuba…to decrease monetary and real wages, to bring about hunger, desperation, and the overthrow of government.”
The Central Committee of the Communist Party of Canada condemns the Canadian government’s ongoing support for Israel’s genocide and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in Gaza as well as Canada’s role in provoking a potentially devastating wider regional war.
The overwhelming vote on December 13 by the United Nations General Assembly in favour of a non-binding resolution for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza is an important victory for the growing international campaign to condemn Israel’s war against the Palestinian people. The final vote was 153 in favour, 23 abstentions, and only 10 opposed (the US, Israel, Austria, the Czech Republic, and a handful of tiny US client states). By comparison, the Arab-sponsored resolution on Oct. 27 for a “humanitarian truce” saw 121 countries voting in favour, 14 against, and 44 abstaining. This time, two months of massive street protests against the criminal Israeli war in Gaza forced PM Justin Trudeau’s Liberals to change their position; Canada, which has always backed Israel in previous General Assembly votes, joined the rest of the world in calling for a ceasefire. Overall, these votes indicate a deeper fracturing of the so-called “western consensus” and the growing diplomatic and political isolation of the US and Israel.
