La COVID-19 a retiré au capitalisme son lustre, dévoilant les fortes inégalités basées sur le genre, la racialisation et la capacité. Selon l’Organisation des Nations Unies, les femmes forment la majorité des travailleur-euses dans les secteurs de l’économie les plus sévèrement touchés par les fermetures en lien avec la pandémie.
Le Parti communiste du Canada condamne la violence sauvage du gouvernement espagnol de Mariano Rajoy exercée contre la population catalane afin de l’empêcher de voter dans un référendum le 1er octobre 2017 pour se prononcer sur son avenir en tant que nation.
Selon les autorités catalanes plus de 800 personnes ont été blessées par les forces policières dont près d’une centaine plus gravement.
Tandis que chef de l’État espagnol se réjouissait d’avoir réussi à empêcher « avec toute sa force » le référendum, le gouvernement régional catalan a annoncé de son côté que plus de 90% des 2,2 millions de bulletins de votes qui ont pu être comptés soutiennent l’option indépendantiste. La police aurait par ailleurs réussi à fermer 319 bureaux de votes et saisir les urnes de sorte qu’environ 770 000 bulletins de vote n’ont pu être comptés. Malgré la répression et en tenant compte des bulletins saisis par la police, c’est environ 56% des 5,3 millions des électrices et électeurs enregistrés qui ont pu participer au vote.
As the economic crisis continues, more progressive people are drawing partisan conclusions and deciding they need to take action, get organized and involve themselves in resistance. Some are becoming active in their unions and mass organizations. The most advanced are being won to the struggle for socialism, and some are joining our ranks.
The urgent question today is to forge a plan of united class action linking the struggle for reforms with the revolutionary struggle for socialism.
Neither social reformism nor ultra-leftism can forge such a way forward. Socialist theory and practice will not arise spontaneously. Only the work of the Communist Party, as our programme says, Afuses scientific socialism with the class struggle and by so doing spreads political and socialist consciousness among the workers B an awareness of their historic mission as a class,@ to lead the peoples of Canada from capitalism to socialism and ultimately communism.

Comrade Chair and Comrades:
We open this convention with a warm welcome to all of the Delegates and Alternates who have traveled from all over Canada to attend this 38th Convention of our Party, which takes place just one week short of the 95th anniversary of our Party’s birth on May 28, 1921.
The Communist Party of Canada strongly denounces the decision of the federal Conservative government to deny the right to self‑determination of the people of Québec, by intervening before the Québec Superior Court in support of the legal challenge to Bill 99 initiated by the former head of the Equality Party, Keith Henderson.
Bill 99 was adopted in 2000 in response to the federal government’s “Clarity Act,” which imposes the burden of more than a simple majority in response to a question deemed “clear” by the federal government, in order for Québec to be able to declare sovereignty. The “Clarity Act” is in fact an outright denial of the right to self‑determination of Québec.
