The Central Committee of the Communist Party of Canada has learned with profound sadness the news of the tragic death of cde. Sitaram Yechury, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), on September 12, 2024. We convey our most heartfelt condolences to Sitaram’s family and friends, and to the leadership and membership of the CPI(M) on the untimely passing of this outstanding Communist revolutionary and leader.
Over many decades, Comrade Sitaram contributed greatly to the work of his party and to the cause of the working class and oppressed peoples of India: as editor of the party’s English language press “People’s Democracy”, as the head of its International Department of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), and then as its General Secretary since 2015.
Comrade Yechury played a crucial role in helping to consolidate and rebuild the International Communist Movement following the counter-revolutionary setbacks in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe in the early 1990s.
Throughout the course of his lifetime, cde. Sitaram fought for the best interests of the workers, farmers and suffering masses of India and around the world, and held high the banner of Marxism-Leninism and the values of democracy, peace, liberation and social advance.
We share in this loss of such a respected and courageous fallen comrade.
